The War on Terror

by Darrel Edwards, PhD

We are at war.  We have launched strikes against a foreign regime.  Their statements:  Jihad!  Targets have been missed.  Only killed:  women, children and elderly.

Breaking news:  (Not really news.)  These are the cries from the opposition in any lop-sided war.  They say, rule in the name of God.  The enemy is striking our women, children, and elderly.  Does this suggest that women, children and elderly are those stationed at military installations?

My Editorial Position; It seems that we cannot bomb without making mistakes.  But, collateral damage is not really acceptable.  Not when it’s the Red Cross or mine-finding dogs or innocents.  An Innocent (by the way) is anyone who means you no harm.  A soldier with a gun is not innocent.  A child with a hand grenade is not innocent.  Both may be tragic and sorrowful.  So plan carefully and strike with precision or the world will not stay with us.

My Commentary:  There are four types of information that comes over the networks or airwaves:  (1) News -  who, what, when, and where … not why (that is not news) … someone reporting that they know why may indeed know why, but their statement is not news; (2) Commentary – the reporters speculation which may try to answer the question “why” or may just report the reporters perspective; (3) Editory – (I know I made up the word) – is a personal opinion about what should be clearly stated as that; and (4) Theater – is carefully edited or even staged material that makes a point or states an agenda, but is not an event that spontaneously unfolds.  It is staged.
